ISLAMABAD: Saying the defendant was convicted on mere circumstantial evidence that could not establish his guilt beyond reasonable doubt, the Supreme Court on Wednesday acquitted Hafiz Ghulam Rasool sentenced to prison for murder of Muhammad Saleh.
The three-member Shariat Appallete bench of Supreme Court chaired by Justice Asif Saeed Khan Khosa and comprising Justice Tariq Pervaiz and Justice Khalid Masood heard the case and remarked that its review of the lower court’s decision on the case of Ghulam Rasool indicated that the police and prosecution’s evidence against him was weak.
Siddique Baloch counsel for Ghulam Rasool told the court that the trial court awarded death sentence and imposed Rs 0.2 million fine. The Balochistan High Court had also maintained the trial court verdict.
