LARKANA: Two out of four classrooms of Government Pilot Higher Secondary School Larkana, have been given to a private contractor and are being used as a canteen instead of teaching purposes, DT learnt on Friday.
Allegedly the Principal of the school, Deedar Ali Mugheri, has given these rooms to an outsider to set up a canteen. In the other room old furniture of the school has been dumped. The contractor burns woods which creates environmental problems for the students in the adjacent classrooms.
The unethical act of the principal has made teachers livid who have objected seriously. Senior teacher, Sikander Ali Kalhoro has said that setting up of a canteen inside the classrooms isa very serious issue which should be condemned due to which the sanctity of an educational institution has been compromised. He said Larkana Deputy Commissioner, during his two visits, had also expressed his concerned and directed the authorities to stop it forthwith but the principal still remains unmoved. He further said that fifteen old trees have also been cut down from the premises of school which also need to be probed.
Two students of class VII told newsmen that their class was located near the canteen due to which smoke directly affects them. The students said they have lodged complain multiple times but the principal but he has not taken any notice.
When contacted, Principal Deedar Mugheri said that he got permission from the District Education Officer for chopping down the trees because these trees were on the road and were creating trouble in electricity supply. He asserted that due to sale of unhygienic Samosa and Pakora, new canteen was set up in the school for quality products.
Canteen owner Muhammad Akram confirmed that he has been given rooms by the principal few months back for which no rent is paid by him, but he added, quality things are being prepared and sold to the students of the Saint Joseph School as well apart from this school.
It is pertinent to note that Government Pilot Higher Secondary School, Larkana was built in 1926 where 4,700 students are enrolled at the moment and is termed as the largest school of Larkana city. Senior Minister Nisar Khuhro, Late senator Dr. Khalid Mahmood Soomro, Begum Dr. Ashraf Abbasi are among the noted personalities who received education at the school.
