Pakistan Railways is planning to rehabilitate and renovate 31 railway stations across Pakistan to provide better facilities to its passengers.
The reconstruction of Bahawalpur, Okara, Sahiwal, Raiwind, Narowal, Nankana Sahib and Hassanabdal stations are already in progress, an official in the Ministry of Railways told media.
Over Rs451 million has been spent on the repairs, renovation and reconstruction of the railway stations under the current government, officials said.
The government also initiated the project to rehabilitate the signalling system from Lodhran to Kotri. This project, estimated to cost over Rs38 million, was deferred as the same project was included in the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
Two other projects of railway signaling from Lodhran to Shahdara and from Mirpur Mathelo to Shahadpur, inherited by the present government, were termed as ‘sick projects’.
The total cost of the re-signaling project is estimated to be over Rs17 billion. It will cover 31 stations over a section of 433 km from Lodhran to Shahdara Bagh.
The cost of the same project from Mirpur Mathelo to Shahdapur, which includes 23 stations is estimated to be over Rs7 billion.
30 out of 54 stations have been renovated with traffic having resumed. The remaining 24 stations are a work in progress.
